To repair a torn Achilles tendon, surgery may be necessary after the initial swelling is reduced, about a week after the tear occurs. During the repair surgery, the doctor cuts an incision above the heel on the back of the ankle in order to sew the tendon back together. The out-patient procedure is usually done under local anesthesia. Post-surgery, the patient wears a cast or walking boot for a month and a half to three months. The cast or boot is adjusted during the healing process from a downward pointing angle to a neutral position. Specific exercises and physical therapy are completed as part of the healing process to regain motion and strength.
